Hearing the word ceramic is usually most people will interpret it is limited to items such as stoneware pottery, stoneware, jugs, and so on, but these items are the products of traditional ceramics are still very limited in scope.

But for most people, the term ceramics is not a strange thing, either of the term, as well as the understanding of visual perception as a whole. But perhaps there is a bit of confusion when hearing the term earthenware, pottery, terracotta, tile, greenware, stoneware, porcelain, and so on.

While the use of ceramic objects in everyday life has been more widely with the development of science and technology. Thus it is necessary the existence of a review of our understanding of ceramics that are not stuck in a narrow range. The term comes from the Greek ceramics (Keramos) which means a pot or pots made of fired clay. Further emphasized again that the ceramic is a product made from clay by the combustion process.

In dictionaries and encyclopedias defined as a result of ceramic art and technology to produce goods from burnt clay, like pottery, tile, porcelain, and so on. But, not all ceramics derived from clay. The definition includes all the latest understanding of ceramic materials instead of metals and inorganic solids. Ceramic is a material that is very useful, because the properties of special / unique that is very broad.

Which is a brittle ceramic material is very strong but it can be made to resemble heavy lead or made as material floating in the water. From these definitions then comes the 2 main classes: traditional ceramic (ceramic traditional) and modern ceramics / advanced (advanced ceramic). Traditional ceramics are the major products made from ceramic clay.

Clay or clay is one of the silicate minerals (minerals that contain SiO2). In this traditional ceramic clay serves as a plastic-forming material. All objects are made of ceramic silicate minerals can be categorized as traditional ceramics for example: furnace pottery, jars and pottery, tableware, whiteware, porcelain wares, sculptures, objects sanitary ware, cement, tiles and others.

In other words, traditional ceramics are silicate-based ceramic. While advanced ceramics / modern is not made of clay or silicate-based materials, but is made from a particular alloy and oxide compounds are usually produced synthetic materials that do not exist in nature. The manufacturing process must be maintained in certain circumstances and tightly controlled.

Modern Ceramics is widespread in a variety of applications, for example bioceramics, superconductors, catalysts, refractory, optical, and others. Modern ceramics can be seen as a large group of advanced materials, which can be divided into ceramics, metals, polymers, composites, and electronic materials.
