Suhu bakar keramik berkaitan langsung dengan suhu kematangan, yaitu keadaan benda keramik yang telah mencapai kematangan secara tepat tanpa mengalami perubahan bentuk. Agar tanah liat dapat berubah menjadi keramik, maka tanah liat yang telah dibentuk tersebut harus melalui proses pembakaran dengan suhu melebihi 600\u00baC.<\/p>\n

Setelah melalui suhu tesebut, tanah liat akan mengalami perubahan menjadi suatu mineral yanga padat, keras, dan permanen, perubahan ini disebut Cheramic change atau perubahan keramik. Tanah liat yang dibakar kurang dari 600\u00baC belum memiliki kematangan yang tepat walaupun sudah mengalami perubahan keramik, suhu kematangan tanah liat atau vitrifikasi adalah kondisi keramik yang telah mencapai suhu kematangan secara tepat tanpa mengalami perubahan bentuk.<\/p>\n

Untuk itu sebelum melaksanakan proses pembakaran, perlu diketahui terlebih dahulu jenis tanah liat yang digunakan untuk membentuk benda keramik. Suhu kematangan tanah liat mempunyai rentang yang cukup lebar, biasanya antara 50\u00baC-200\u00baC. Apabila tanah liat yang dibakar pada temperatur rendah sudah mengkaca hal ini berarti vitrifikasi tanah liat tersebut rendah, untuk memperbaikinya dapat dilakukan dengan menambahkan kaolin atau silica.<\/p><\/div>\n

Suhu pembakaran sangat berpengaruh pada vitrifikasi dan kekuatan tanah liat, kenaikan suhu (temperatur) bakar tanah liat earthenware dan stoneware terhadapvitrifikasi dan kekuatan bakarnya. Namun apabila suhu bakar telah mencapai total vitrifikasinya maka kekuatan tanah liat akan menjadi menurun dan bahkan menjadi leleh.<\/p>\n
