Alat yang digunakan untuk memproduksi acetylene adalah generator acetylene. Proses kerja generator relatif sederhana, yaitu mempertemukan calcium carbide dengan air secara proporsional sesuai dengan kebutuhan gas acetylene. Pertemuan air dengan calcium carbide segera diikuti reaksi yang menghasilkan gas acetylene yang ditampung dalam generator sebelum dipakai.<\/p>\n<p>Generator-generator portabel bisanya digunakan untuk memproduksi acetylene dengan kapasitas kecil dan dapat dipakai langsung untuk melayani satu atau dua pembakar. Untuk memproduk-si acetylene secara besar yang ditampung dengan tekanan tinggi dan didistribusikan dalam tabung, diperlukan generator tekanan tinggi berkapasitas besar yang stationer (menetap) seperti gambar di bawah ini.<\/p>\n<p>Prinsip kerjanya secara garis besar tidak jauh berbeda dengan generator portabel.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-L0f7Tw6KOJk\/VNaW8kaMQeI\/AAAAAAAAISE\/49nuhtQJJOQ\/s1600-h\/clip_image0023.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"clip_image002\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-1CoqvIgSOYQ\/VNaXAzGE5TI\/AAAAAAAAISk\/eb8pWJDFNmU\/clip_image002_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800\" alt=\"clip_image002\" width=\"291\" height=\"222\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><strong>Oksigen<\/strong><br \/>\nOksigen diperlukan untuk setiap proses pembakaran, termasuk juga pada las oxy-acetylene. Oksigen murni digunakan agar pembakaran berlangsung cepat, sempurna dan gas yang dihasilkan lebih terkontrol sehingga tidak mempengaruhi kualitas lasan. Pembakaran yang cepat dan sempurna akan menghasilkan suhu maksimum sehingga pengelasan berlangsung cepat.<\/p>\n<p>Unsur-unsur dalam udara tersebut dipisahkan berdasarkan perbedaan titik didihnya. Misal udara mendidih pada suhu 182,77oC. Udara yang sudah dipisahkan disimpan pada suhu 195,55oC.<\/p>\n<p>Pemisahan udara tidak saja menghasilkan oksigen, tetapi juga beberapa gas lain yang diperlukan pada proses pengelasan lain yaitu : karbon dioksida, argon, dan helium. Proses terbentuknya nyala oxy-acetylene<\/p>\n<p>Nyala inti tersebut relatif kecil, bersinar terang berwarna kebiru- biruan. Nyala inilah yang menghasilkan panas cukup tinggi yang diperlukan untuk pengelasan. Jika semua karbon yang terurai pada tahap pertama habis terbakar, kondisi itu dinyatakan api netral. Tidak ada unsur karbon yang lepas dan bereaksi dengan benda kerja. Nyala api Oxy-acetylene dapat dikontrol dengan mudah memakai katup yang ada pada pembakar.<\/p>\n<p>Perubahan proporsi campuran oksigen dan acetylene yang mengalir ke ujung pembakar akan mengubah karakteristik kimiawi nyala inti yang akan mempengaruhi pencairan dan komposisi benda kerja.
