Mula-mula potensi tenaga air dikonversikan menjadi tenaga mekanik dalam turbin air. Kemudian turbin air memutar generator yang membangkitkan tenaga listrik. Untuk dapat memanfaatkan potensi tenaga air dari sungai ini, maka kita perlu membendung sungai tersebut dan airnya disalurkan ke bangunan air PLTA seperti ditunjukkan oleh Gambar III.3. Ditinjau dari caranya membendung air, PLTA dapat dibagi menjadi dua kategori:<br \/>\na. PLTArun off river<br \/>\nb. PLTA dengan kolam tando (reservoir)<br \/>\nPLTA run off river, air sungai dialihkan dengan menggunakan dam yang dibangun memotong aliran sungai. Air sungai ini kemudian disalurkan ke bangunan air PLTA seperti pada Gambar III.4<br \/>\nPLTA dengan kolam tando (reservoir), aliran sungai dibendung dengan bendungan besar agar terjadi penimbunan air sehingga terjadi kolam tando. Selanjutnya air dari kolam tando dialirkan ke bangunan air PLTA seperti Gambar III.4.<\/p>\n<p>Dengan adanya penimbunan air terlebih dahulu dalam kolam tando, maka pada musin hujan di mana debit air sungai besarnya melebihi kapasitas penyaluran air bangunan air PLTA, air dapat ditampung dalam kolam tando.<\/p>\n<p>Pada musim kemarau di mana debit air sungai lebih kecil dari pada kapasitas penyaluran air bangunan air PLTA, selisih kekurangan air ini dapat di atasi dengan mengambil air dari timbunan air yang ada dalam kolam tando. Inilah keuntungan penggunaan kolam tando pada PLTA. Hal ini tidak dapat dilakukan pada PLTA run off river.<\/p>\n<p>PLTA run off river , daya yang dapat dibangkitkan tergantung pada debit air sungai. Tetapi PLTA run off river biaya pembangunannya lebih murah dari pada PLTA dengan kolam tando (reservoir), karena kolam tando memerlukan bendungan yang besar dan juga memerlukan daerah genangan yang luas.<\/p>\n<p>Jika ada sungai yang mengalir keluar dari sebuah danau, maka dapat dibangun PLTA dengan menggunakan danau tersebut sebagai kolam tando. Contoh mengenai hal ini, yaitu PLTA Asahan yang menggunakan Danau Toba sebagai kolam tando, karena Sungai Asahan mengalir dari Danau Toba.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dalam PLTA, potensi tenaga air dikonversikan menjadi tenaga listrik.
