Men-start mesin diesel dengan daya di bawah 50 kW dapat dilakukan dengan tangan melalui engkol. Untuk daya di atas 50 kW sampai kira-kira 100 kW, umumnya distart dengan menggunakan baterai aki. Sedangkan untuk mesin diesel dengan daya di atas 100 kW, umumnya digunakan udara tekan.<\/p>\n<p>Dari segi pemeliharaan dan perbaikan, unit pembangkit diesel tergolong unit yang banyak menimbulkan masalah, kbususnya yang menyangkut mesin dieselnya. Hal ini disebabkan karena banyaknya bagian-bagian yang bergerak dan bergesek satu sama lain sehingga menjadi aus dan memerlukan penggantian secara periodik.<\/p>\n<p>Untuk itu, diperlukan manajemen pemeliharaan beserta penyediaan suku cadang yang teratur dan dicampur dengan bahan bakar yang telah dikabulkan oleh pengabut. Posisi 2 plunyer menekan BBM ke pengabut karena lubang ke tangki telah ditutup oleh dinding plunyer. Posisi 3, plunyer berhenti menekan dinding BBM (gembos). BBM dapat menyelinap kembali ke tangki melalui alun tegak pada plunyer terus ke lubang yang sekarang telah terbuka akibat adanya alur miring pada dinding plunyer.<\/p>\n<p>Plunyer bergerak dalam arah ke atas dan ke bawah. Pengaturan banyaknya BBM yang dipompakan ke arah pengabut diatur dengan mengatur besarnya langkah efektif dari plunyer yaitu: besarnya diatur dengan memutar plunyer pada sumbunya.
