Untuk menyalakan listrik di daerah baru umumnya digunakan PLTD oleh PLN. Di lain pihak, jika perkembangan pemakaian tenaga listrik telah melebihi 100 MW, penyediaan tenaga listrik yang menggunakan PLTD tidak ekonomis lagi sehingga harus dibangun Pusat Listrik lain, seperti PLTU atau PLTA.<\/p>\n<p>Untuk melayani beban PLTD dengan kapasitas di atas 100 MW akan tidak ekonomis karena unitnya menjadi banyak, mengingat Unit PLTD yang terbesar di pasaran sekitar 12,5 MW.<\/p>\n<p>Gambar III.42 menggambarkan prinsip kerja mesin diesel 4-langkah, dan Gambar III.43 prinsip kerja mesin diesel 2-langkah. Secara teoretis, mesin diesel 2-langkah dengan dimensi dan jumlah putaran per detik yang sama dibandingkan dengan mesin diesel 4-langkah, dapat menghasilkan daya 2 kali lebih besar. Hal ini disebabkan karena pada mesin diesel 2-langkah terdapat 1 kali langkah tenaga untuk setiap 2 langkah atau setiap 1 putaran, sedangkan pada mesin diesel 4-langkah, langkah tenaga terjadi langkah setiap 4 langkah atau setiap 2 putaran.<\/p>\n<p>Namun dalam praktik, angka 2 kali lebih besar untuk daya yang di dapat pada mesin diesel 2 Langkah tidak tercapai (hanya sekitar 1,8 kali). Hal ini disebabkan karena proses pembilasan ruang bakar silinder mesin diesel 2-langkah tidak sebersih pada mesin diesel 4-langkah sehingga proses pembakarannya tidak sesempurna seperti pada mesin diesel 4-langkah. Karena proses pembakaran ini, maka efisiensi mesin diesel 2 langkah tidak bisa sebaik efisiensi mesin diesel 4-langkah. Pemakaian bahan bakarnya lebih boros.<\/p>\n<p>Mesin diesel 2-langkah lebih cocok digunakan pada keperluan yang memerlukan penghematan ruangan, seperti pada lokomotif kereta api atau pada kapal laut.
