Saluran udara rawan terhadap sambaran petir yang menghasilkan gelombang berjalan (surja tegangan) yang dapat masuk ke pusat pembangkit listrik.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Oleh karena itu, dalam pusat listrik harus ada lightning arrester (penangkal petir) yang berfungsi menangkal gelombang berjalan dari petir yang akan masuk ke instalasi pusat pembangkit listrik. Gelombang berjalan juga dapat berasal dari pembukaan dan penutupan pemutus tenaga (switching). Pada sistem Tegangan Ekstra Tinggi (TET) yang besarnya di atas 350 kV, surja tegangan yang disebabkan oleh switching lebih besar dari pada surja petir. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Saluran udara yang keluar dari pusat pembangkit listrik merupakan bagian instalasi pusat pembangkit listrik yang paling rawan sambaran petir dan karenanya harus diberi lightning arrester. Selain itu, lightning arrester harus berada di depan setiap transformator dan harus terletak sedekat mungkin dengan transformator. Hal ini perlu karena pada petir yang merupakan gelombang berjalan menuju ke transformator akan melihat transformator sebagai suatu ujung terbuka (karena transformator mempunyai isolasi terhadap bumi\/tanah) sehingga gelombang pantulannya akan saling memperkuat dengan gelombang yang datang. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Berarti transformator dapat mengalami tegangan surja dua kali besarnya tegangan gelombang surja yang datang. Untuk mencegah terjadinya hal ini, lightning arrester harus dipasang sedekat mungkin dengan transformator. Lightning arrester bekerja pada tegangan tertentu di atas tegangan operasi untuk membuang muatan listrik dari surja petir dan berhenti beroperasi pada tegangan tertentu di atas tegangan operasi agar tidak terjadi arus pada tegangan operasi, dan perbandingan dua tegangan ini disebut rasio proteksi arrester. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Tingkat isolasi bahan arrester harus berada di bawah tingkat isolasi bahan transformator agar apabila sampai terjadi flashover, maka flashover diharapkan terjadi pada arrester dan tidak pada transformator. Transformator merupakan bagian instalasi pusat listrik yang paling mahal dan rawan terhadap sambaran petir, selain itu jika sampai terjadi kerusakan transformator, maka daya dari pusat listrik tidak dapat sepenuhnya disalurkan dan biayanya mahal serta waktu untuk perbaikan relatif lama. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Salah satu perkembangan dari lightning arrester adalah penggunaan oksida seng Zn02 sebagai bahan yang menjadi katup atau valve arrester. Dalam menentukan rating arus arrester, sebaiknya dipelajari statistik petir setempat.
