Oleh karena itu, pabrik memberitahukan untuk partikel terkecil yang mampu disaring oleh filter. Pada umumnya ukuran yang dipakai adalah mikron.<br \/>\n1 mikron = 0,00004 inchi = 0,001016 mm<\/p>\n<p>Sebagai contoh, saat ini filter yag dipakai di lapangan pada umumnya menyaring kotoran yang diameternya terkecil 10 mikron. Sedangkan filter yang terbuat dari anyaman kawat (wire mest filter), partikel terbesar yang dapat lewat adalah berdiameter 150 mikron. Biarpun tak sebaik filter lain dalam hal penyaringan kotoran, filter dari kawat ini hambatan alirnya kecil sekali, sehingga baik sekali dipakai pada saluran masuk (inlet) pompa hidrolik karena akan mencegah terjadinya kevakukan saat flowrate pompa tinggi. Bahan-bahan kontaminasi dapat berupa zat perekat, cair maupun gas. Misalnya, serpihan logam, potongan karet atau gasket, fiber, cat, debu,pasir, air, asam dsb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deterioration<\/strong><br \/>\nSelain itu oli sendiri dapat menjadi sumber pengrusakan, peristiwa ini dikenal dengan istilah deterioration. Selain berdiskulasi dalam sistem, endapan dan asam-asam akan terbentuk akibat panas, oksidasi dan tekanan. Endapan tersebut membentuk semacam perekat, sehingga dapat merekatkan bagian &#8211; bagian yang mestinya saling bergeseran, menutup lubang-lubang kecil dan dapat mengikat partikel-partikel logam yang akan mempercepat proses pengikisan ( keausan ).
