Untuk menggunakan katup solenoid direct-acting dengan aliran yang besar dan tekanan tinggi, maka diperlukan solenoid yang sangat besar dan jumlah arus listrik yang besar pula. Bahkan aktuator pneumatik harus besar jika dihubungkan dengan katup kontrol directional. Untuk mengoperasikan katup besar, maka katup yang dioperasikan dengan solenoid yang kecil bisa digunakan untuk mengontrol oli pilot untuk mengoperasikan spool utama. Jumlah tekanan yang diperlukan untuk merubah spool utama biasanya 75 sampai 100 psi, tetapi tekanan ini biasanya berubah-ubah tergantung konfigurasi spoolnya. Apabila katup dua tingkat memiliki oli pilot yang secara internal dialirkan ke port tangki utama, maka check valve pada port tangki tidak akan bekeja.
