Radiator dilengkapi dengan tutup radiator yang bertekanan dan menutup rapat pada radiator. Ini memungkinkan naiknya temperatur pendingin 100\u00b0C tanpa terjadi mendidih. Penggunaan tutup radiator bertekanan (pressure cap) diutamakan sebab efek pendinginan radiator bertambah dan membuat perbedaan suhu antara udara luar dan cairan pendingin. Pada tutup radiator dilengkapi relief valve dan vacuum valve seperti pada kedua gambar dibawah ini.<\/p>\n

a) Cara kerja relief valve<\/strong>
\nBila suhu air pendingin naik akan menyebabkan tekanan bertambah, bila tekanannya mencapai 0,3 \u2013 1,0 kg\/cm2 pada 110 \u2013 120\u00b0C. Relief valve akan terbuka dan membebaskan kelebihan tekanan melalui overflow pipe.<\/div>\n

b) Cara kerja vacuum valve<\/strong>
\nSaat suhu air pendingin turun setelah mesin berhenti dan membentuk kevakuman dalam radiator yang akan membuka vacuum valve menghisap air pendingin dari reservoir (lihat gambar 4.21 di bawah).<\/div>\n

c) Tangki Cadangan<\/strong>
\nReservoir dihubungkan ke radiator melalui overflow pipe. Reservoir berfungsi untuk mencegah terbuangnya air pendingin dan menjamin agar tetap dapat mengirimkan cairan pendingin. Untuk lebih jelasnya lihat gambar 4.22.<\/div>\n

d) Pompa Air<\/strong>
\nPompa air berfungsi untuk memompakan cairan pendingin dari radiator ke water jacket. Umumnya yang banyak digunakan adalah tipe sentrifugal. Pompa air digerakkan oleh tali kipas atau timing belt. Contoh gambar 4.23 dibawah menunjukkan pompa air yang digerakkan tali kipas.<\/div>\n

e) Thermostat<\/strong>
\nThermostat berfungsi untuk mempercepat tercapainya suhu kerja mesin. Tipe thermostat yang umum di gunakan adalah tipe wax (lilin). Pada thermostat terdapat jiggle valve yang berfungsi untuk mem-perm mudah masuknya air saat pengisian. Seperti ditunjukkan gambar 4.26 di bawah ini menggunakan wax.<\/div>\n

f) Kipas Pendingin dan Kopling Fluida<\/strong>
\nRadiator didinginkan oleh udara luar, pendinginannya tidak cukup apabila kendaraan berhenti seperti halnya pada alat berat. Untuk itu diperlukan kipas (fan) yang akan menambah pendinginan.<\/div>\n

Kipas pendingin digerakkan oleh tali kipas atau motor listrik. Seperti ditunjukkan gambar 4.27 di atas. Kopling fluida berfungsi mendinginkan radiator dengan lebih efisien. Saat temperatur udara rendah, kecepatan kipas rendah sehingga mesin menjadi panas dan saat temperatur tinggi, otomatis putaran kipas menjadi cepat.<\/p><\/div>\n

g) Tali Kipas<\/strong>
\nKipas pendingin umumnya digerakkan oleh tali kipas. Tali kipas terbagi menjadi V-belt dan V ribbed belt .

V belt terdapat 2 macam jenis yaitu tipe konvensional dan tipe cog. Tipe ini sering kita jumpai sebagai penggerak kipas. Untuk lebih jelasnya dapat dilihat pada gambar 4.27 di atas.<\/p>\n

(2) V Ribbed Belt
\nV ribbed belt mempunyai keuntungan efisiensi pemindahan tenaga yang besar dan panas yang tinggi, serta tahan lama<\/p><\/div>\n
