Sistem berfungsi mendinginkan mesin dan mencegah panas yang berlebihan. Sistem pendingin ada dua macam yaitu sistem pendingin dengan air dan sistem pendingin udara. Umumnya mesin mobil banyak menggunakan sistem pendingin air. Sistem pendingin air mempunyai kerugian akan konstruksi yang rumit dan biaya yang mahal.<\/p>\n

Sedangkan keuntungan dari system pendingin air yaitu lebih aman karena ruang bakar dikelilingi oleh air dan berfungsi sebagai peredam bunyi serta dapat digunakan sebagai sumber panas untuk heater (pemanas ruangan). Sistem pendingin air dilengkapi oleh water jacket, pompa air (water pump), radiator, thermostat, kipas (fan), slang karet (hose), fan clutch dan lain- lain.<\/p>\n

Proses kerja sistem pendingin<\/strong>
\nPada saat mesin dingin:
\nTekanan pada sistem dibangkitkan oleh pompa air dan bersirkulasi dari water pump ke water jacket ke by pass hose kembali lagi ke water pump karena pada saat ini mesin masih dingin dan air pun masih dingin sehingga thermostat masih tertutup seperti ditunjukkan gambar 4.16 di bawah ini.<\/div>\n

Pada saat mesin panas :<\/strong>
\nSetelah mesin menjadi panas, kira-kira pada temperatur 85\u00b0C thermostat mulai terbuka dan katup bypass tertutup dalam bypass sirkuit sehingga aliran air pendingin mengalir dari radiator ke lower hose, ke water pump, ke water jacket, ke upper hose dan kembali ke radiator untuk didinginkan dengan kipas dan putaran udara dengan adanya gerakan maju dari kendaraan itu sendiri. Aliran air pada sistem pendingin dengan kondisi mesin dalam keadaan panas dapat dilihat pada gambar 4.17 berikut.<\/div>\n
