Pada baterai terdapat dua kutub yang potensialnya berbeda. Jika baterai yang digunakan tiga buah, maka lampu menyala makin terang. Mengapa demikian? Hal ini disebabkan beda potensial kutub positif dan kutub negatifnya makin besar sehingga muatan-muatan listrik yang mengalir pada penghantar makin banyak atau arus listriknya makin besar. Besarnya arus listrik (disebut kuat arus listrik) sebanding dengan banyaknya muatan listrik yang mengalir.<\/p>\n<p>Kuat arus listrik merupakan kecepatan aliran muatan listrik. Dengan demikian, yang dimaksud dengan kuat arus listrik adalah jumlah muatan listrik yang melalui penampang suatu penghantar setiap satuan waktu.
