Pada alat-alat listrik seperti pemanas listrik, kompor listrik, dan pengering rambut, energi listrik diubah menjadi energi panas pada hambatan kawat yang dikenal dengan nama \u201celemen pemanas\u201d. Kemudian, pada banyak lampu (Gambar 7.4), filamen kawat yang kecil menjadi sedemikian panas sehingga bersinar. Pada setiap tumbukan, terjadi transfer energi dari elektron ke atom yang ditumbuknya, sehingga energi kinetik atom bertambah dan menyebabkan suhu elemen kawat semakin tinggi. Bila anda perhatikan sebuah setrika listrik yang dihubungkan dengan sumber tegangan listrik, maka tidak berapa lama akan menjadi panas.<\/p>\n<p>Hal ini terjadi karena adanya usaha untuk memindahkan muatan listrik setiap saat pada rangkaian listrik yang besarnya sama dengan energi listrik yang diubah menjadi energi kalor. Besarnya energi setiap satuan waktu disebut daya listrik. Daya yang diubah oleh peralatan listrik merupakan energi yang diubah bila muatan Q bergerak melintasi beda potensial sebesar V. Satuan daya listrik dalam SI adalah watt (1 W = 1 J\/s).
