Kilatan petir yang sangat kuat dapat menerangi langit. Petir merupakan fenomena alam yang menunjukkan adanya energi listrik. Sejalan dengan berkembangnya kehidupan, listrik menjadi bagian yang sangat penting dalam kehidupan manusia. Hampir seluruh peralatan yang digunakan manusia memanfaatkan bantuan energi listrik.<\/p>\n<p>Listrik pada dasarnya dibedakan menjadi dua macam, yaitu listrik statis (berkaitan dengan muatan listrik dalam keadaan diam) dan listrik dinamis (berkaitan dengan muatan listrik dalam keadaan bergerak). Pada saat sakelar pada suatu rangkaian listrik ditutup, lampu akan menyala, dan sebaliknya saat sakelar dibuka lampu mati. Mengapa demikian?<\/p>\n<p>Listrik terbentuk karena energi mekanik dari generator yang menyebabkan perubahan medan magnet di sekitar kumparan. Perubahan ini menyebabkan timbulnya aliran muatan listrik pada kawat\/penghantar. Aliran muatan listrik pada kawat Anda kenal sebagai arus listrik. Aliran muatan dapat berupa muatan positif (proton) dan muatan negatif (elektron). Aliran listrik yang mengalir pada penghantar dapat berupa arus searah atau direct current (DC) dan dapat berupa arus bolak-balik atau alternating current (AC).<\/p>\n<p>Pada dasarnya rangkaian listrik dibedakan menjadi dua, yaitu rangkaian listrik terbuka dan rangkaian listrik tertutup. Rangkaian listrik terbuka adalah suatu rangkaian yang belum dihubungkan dengan sumber tegangan, sedangkan rangkaian listrik tertutup adalah suatu rangkaian yang sudah dihubungkan dengan sumber tegangan.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tneutron.net\/elektro\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/12\/image-20.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tneutron.net\/elektro\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/12\/image_thumb-20.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"389\" height=\"132\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\na. Aliran air<br \/>\nGambar 1.11 Aliran muatan positif dari A ke B identik dengan aliran air dari A ke B<\/p>\n<p>Air dalam bejana A mempunyai energi potensial lebih tinggi daripada air dalam bejana B, sehingga terjadi aliran air dari bejana A menuju bejana B atau dikatakan bahwa potensial di A lebih tinggi daripada potensial di B sehingga terjadi aliran muatan listrik dari A ke B. Jadi, dapat dikatakan bahwa muatan listrik positif mengalir dari titik berpotensial tinggi ke titik berpotensial rendah. Selanjutnya, aliran muatan listrik positif tersebut dinamakan arus listrik.<\/p>\n<p>Jadi, arus listrik dapat didefinisikan sebagai aliran muatan positif dari potensial tinggi ke potensial rendah. Arus listrik terjadi apabila ada perbedaan potensial. Bagaimana bila dua titik yang dihubungkan mempunyai potensial yang sama? Tentu saja tidak ada aliran muatan listrik positif atau tidak terjadi arus listrik. Anda pasti berpikir bagaimana halnya dengan muatan listrik negatif? Apakah muatan listrik negatif tidak dapat mengalir?<\/p>\n<p>Pada perkembangan selanjutnya, setelah elektron ditemukan oleh ilmuwan fisika J.J. Thompson (1856\u20131940), ternyata muatan yang mengalir pada suatu penghantar bukanlah muatan listrik positif, melainkan muatan listrik negatif yang disebut elektron. Arah aliran elektron dari potensial rendah ke potensial tinggi (berlawanan dengan arah aliran muatan positif).
