Atom hidrogen memperlihatkan susunan yang paling sederhana. Terdiri atas sebuah elektron dan sebuah proton (biasa disebut inti atom). Elektron sebagai pembawa muatan listrik terkecil dinamakan muatan elementer.<\/p>\n

Elektron adalah pembawa muatan elementer negatip, proton merupakan pembawa muatan elementer positip.<\/strong>

Muatan elementer negatip elektron sama besarnya dengan muatan elementer positip proton. Oleh karenanya muatan-muatan atom memiliki pengaruh yang persis sama. Atom secara listrik bersifat netral.<\/p>\n

Atom netral terdiri atas muatan positip yang sama banyaknya dengan muatan negatip.<\/strong>
\nAtom karbon misalnya memiliki 6 elektron dan juga 6 proton. Selain proton inti atom juga mengandung bagian yang secara listrik bersifat netral, yang biasa disebut dengan netron. Proton dan netron menentukan berat atom yang sebenarnya . Atom yang lain semuanya berjumlah 103 buah dengan susunan yang hampir sama. Pembagian elektron pada lintasan elektron berdasarkan pada aturan tertentu. Namun jumlah elektron tetap selalu sama dengan jumlah proton.<\/p>\n

Ion<\/strong> <\/u>
\nAtom kehilangan sebuah elektron, dengan demikian maka atom tersebut memiliki lebih banyak muatan positifnya dari pada muatan negatip. Atom yang secara utuh bermuatan positif, melaksanakan suatu reaksi listrik, yaitu menarik muatan negatif. Atom yang ditambah\/diberi sebuah elektron, maka secara utuh dia bermuatan negatip dan menarik muatan positif. Atom yang bermuatan seperti ini sebaliknya dapat juga menarik muatan yang berbeda, berarti atom tersebut bergerak. Atas dasar inilah maka atom seperti ini dinamakan ion (ion = berjalan, bhs. Yunani).<\/p>\n

Atom bermuatan positif maupun negatif atau kumpulan atom disebut ion.<\/strong>
