Seperti pada pengukuran arus, pengukuran tegangan listrik dengan voltmeter juga memiliki keterbatasan, tahanan dalam meter Rm membatasi kemampuan batas ukur tegangan. Menaikkan batas ukur tegangan dilakukan dengan memasang tahanan ser Rs pada meter dasar. Tahanan seri Rs akan dialiri arus sebesar Is, arus yang melalui meter Rm sebesar Im.<\/p>\n

Desain Voltmeter<\/strong>
\nBila sebuah meter D\u2019Arsonval ditambah dengan sebuah tahanan seri yang berfungsi sebagai tahanan pengali maka akan mengubah gerakan d\u2019Arsonval menjadi sebuah voltmeter arus searah, seperti yang diperlihatkan pada gambar 6.25.

Tahanan pengali Rs membatasi arus ke kumparan putar (Rm) agar tidak melebihi arus skala penuh Idp . Sebuah voltmeter arus searah mengukur beda potensial antara dua titik dalam sebuah rangkaian arus searah dan dengan demikian dihubungkan paralel terhadap sebuah sumber tegangan atau komponen rangkaian. Batas ukur voltmeter ( V ) yang dibentuk dari meter d\u2019Arsonval ini tergantung pada besarnya nilai tahanan pengali Rs yang diformulasikan sebagai berikut,
\nRs = ( V \/ Im ) \u2013 Rm<\/p>\n

Contoh, bila meter dasar yang digunakan mempunyai data sebagai berikut, Rm = 100 ohm dan arus simpangan penuh Idp = 1 mA. Meter tersebut akan dijadikan sebuah voltmeter dengan batas ukur tegangan searah V = 10 volt, maka nilai tahanan pengalinya adalah Rs = 9900 ohm.

Bila voltmeter arus searah tersebut ditambah dengan sebuah rangkaian penyearah (rectifier) yang mengubah arus bolak-balik menjadi arus searah, maka meter tersebut dapat digunakan untuk mengukur tegangan bolak-balik. Jadi masalah pengukuran arus bolak-balik diperoleh dengan menggunakan sebuah rangkaian penyearah baik secara half wave hanya menggunakan satu buah diode penyearah maupun full wafe dengan menggunakan empat diode dalam rangkaian jembatan.
