Konstruksi yang paling sederhana seperti diperlihatkan pada Gambar 1.12. Metode pembuatan dari resistor ini dapat dikelompokan dalam tiga kelompok utama, yaitu dibedakan berdasarkan bahan resistif yang digunakan:<br \/>\na. Karbon, dapat berupa cetakan dengan komposisi karbon berupa jalur yang kokoh, atau suatu lapisan karbon ditambah bahan pengisi yang fungsinya untuk mengisolasi lapisam bawah (substrate).<br \/>\nb. Lilitan kawat, nichrome atau kawat resistansi lainnya yang dlilit pada bahan pembentuk yang sesuai.<br \/>\nc. Cermet, suatu lapisan resistansi film yang tebal pada lapisan bawahnya berupa keramik.<\/p>\n<p>Beberapa jenis resistor 78ariable yang berlainan telah banyak dibuat, seperti misalnya dari lilitan tunggal jenis geser dengan bentuk terbuka maupun tertutup, sampai dengan yang memiliki banyak lilitan (multi-turn). Komponen jenis ini mempunyai nilai resistansi mudah diatur secara halus secara terus menerus sepanjang keseluruhan jalurnya, maka dari itu sebuah potensiometer pada penerapannya secara mekanik harus kuat, stabil dan dapat dipakai untuk melakukan putaran yang berulang-ulang sebelum mengalami kegagalan.<\/p>\n<p>Pada umumnya kebutuhan akan sebuah potensiometer termasuk dalam salah satu dari katagori berikut:<br \/>\na. Dipakai untuk penyetelan awal (preset) atau trimer<br \/>\nb. Pengatur untuk kegunaan umum, misalnya pengatur nada suara<br \/>\nc.
