Muatan listrik merupakan istilah yang cukup penting dalam dunia kelistrikan. Muatan listrik merupakan sifat fisik dari setiap benda. Menurut Benyamin Franklin, muatan listrik dapat dibedakan menjadi dua, yaitu muatan positif dan muatan negatif.<\/p>\n<p>Semua benda baik padat, gas, dan cair, terdiri dari partikel-partikel kecil yang disebut molekul-molekul. Molekul-molekul sendiri terbentuk oleh partikel-partikel yang lebih kecil lagi yang disebut atom-atom. Benda di mana molekul-molekulnya terdiri dari atom-atom yang sama, lazim disebut sebagai unsur. Bila atom-atom yang membentuk molekul tidak sama, disebut campuran. Sebagai contoh, struktur atom hydrogen terdiri dari satu proton, dan satu elektron, atom oksigen terdiri dari delapan proton, delapan neutron, dan delapan elektron. Satu molekul air (H2O) merupakan komposisi dari dua unsur atom, yaitu dua atom hidrogen (H) dan satu atom oksigen (O). Muatan listrik suatu benda dapat dipengaruhi dan menghasilkan medan elektromagnet. Interaksi antara pergerakan muatan listrik dan medan elektromagnetik merupakan sumber gaya elektromagnetik. Atom yang kehilangan atau mendapat tambahan elektron dianggap tidak stabil. Kelebihan elektron pada suatu atom menghasilkan muatan negatif.<\/p>\n<p>Kekurangan elektron pada suatu atom akan menghasilkan muatan positif. Muatan listrik yang berbeda akan bereaksi dalam berbagai cara. Dua partikel yang bermuatan negatif akan saling tolak menolak, demikian juga dua partikel yang bemuatan positif. Dari eksperimen dapat dibuktikan bahwa muatan listrik dapat dikuantifikasi, yakni nilai muatan satu elektron sebesar 1.602\u00d710\u221219.
