Output suatu inverter dapat berupa tegangan AC dengan bentuk gelombang sinus (sine wave), gelombang kotak (square wave) dan sinus modifikasi (sine wave modified). Sumber tegangan input inverter dapat menggunakan battery, tenaga surya, atau sumber tegangan DC yang lain. Inverter dalam proses konversi tegangn DC menjadi tegangan AC membutuhkan suatu penaik tegangan berupa step up transformer.<\/p>\n<p>Ada dua tipe utama inverter.Output dari inverter sinus dimodifikasi gelombang ini mirip dengan keluaran gelombang persegi kecuali bahwa output pergi ke nol volt untuk sementara waktu sebelum beralih positif atau negatif.Ini adalah biaya sederhana dan rendah (~ $ 0.10USD\/Watt) dan kompatibel dengan perangkat elektronik kebanyakan, kecuali untuk peralatan yang sensitif atau khusus, misalnya untuk printer laser tertentu.<\/p>\n<p>Sebuah inverter sinus murni gelombang menghasilkan output gelombang sinus nyaris sempurna (&lt;3% distorsi harmonik total) yang pada dasarnya sama sebagai kekuatan jaringan utilitas yang disediakan. Berdasarkan bentuk gelombang output-nya inverter dapat dibedakan menjadi :<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>1. Sine wave inverter, yaitu inverter yang memiliki tegangan output dengan bentuk gelombang sinus murni. Inverter jenis ini dapa memberikan supply tegangan ke beban (Induktor) atau motor listrik dengan efisiensi daya yang baik.<\/p>\n<p>2. Sine wave modified inverter, yaitu inverter dengan tegangan output berbentuk gelombang kotak yang dimodifikasi sehingga menyerupai gelombang sinus. Inverter jenis ini memiliki efisiensi daya yang rendah apabila digunakan untuk mensupplay beban induktor atau motor listrik.
