KWH Meter digunakan untuk mencatat besarnya energi listrik yang dipakai oleh suatu beban listrik baik itu resistif, induktif, kapasitif. Semuanya akan dicatat oleh alat KWH Meter tersebut. Berdasarkan cara kerjanya (rancangannya) KWH Meter dibagi menjadi dua bagian yaitu ialah :
\n1. KWH meter dengan prinsif motor,<\/strong>
\n2. KWH meter dengan meter statik.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sedangkan meter statik digunakan untuk meter-meter arus searah. Sedangkan KWH meter dengan frinsip motor digunakan untuk meter-meter induksi arus bolak balik (alternating current). KWH meter dengan prinsif motor mempunyai rotor tanpa kumparan yang terbuat dari piringan alumunium, yang ditempatkan diantara dua buah kutub magnet listrik. Yaitu kutub kumparan arus dan kutub kumparan tegangan

Jumlah putaran rotor dalam per KWH dinamakan konstanta meter atau (C), dimana biasanya sudah tercantum pada plat nama meter KWH itu sendiri. Misalnya kita ambil contoh : 600U\/KWH (artinya 600 putaran per KWH) ; Atau 1200U\/KWH (artinya 1200 putaran per KWH) Dan sebagainya. Dalam hal ini KWH meter digunakan sebagai alat untuk mengukur daya aktif (daya watt) dari suatu beban listrik . oleh karenanya KWH meter dapat juga digunakan untuk menentukan besarnya daya (watt) dari beban adapun rumus rumus yang dipakai dalam teori KWH meter adalah sebagai berikut :
