Sebelum kita membahas cara kerja dari AC Generator\/Alternator agar membantu kita pelajari secara singkat DC generator untuk melihat charging sistem dalam persepektif yang tepat. Generator DC seperti tampak pada gambar 1.5 terdiri dari rangkaian armature, dimana sebuah inti besi lunak bercelah dengan banyak jalur kabel. Pada titik ini generator tampak sama dengan motor starter. Motor starter armature, bagaimanapun juga dapat berputar dikarenakan interaksi dari medan elektro magnetic. Untuk menginduksi tegangan mealui elektro magnit, armature harus berputar dengan digerakan oleh pulley dan belt atau melalui mekanisme lain dengan menggunakan gear. Ujung bagian akhir kumparan armatur terhubung dengan commutator. Pada armatur generator Ac yang dihasilkan adalah tampak pada gambar 1.6:

Namun hasil dari pergerakan comutator dan brush menghasilkan tegangan diantara bruh yang bergelombang diantara 0 dn hasil positif, menghilangkan bagian negatif pada gelombang sinus. Gelombang inilah yang disebut gelombang DC dan dihasilkan oleh generator DC. Seperti pad gambar 1.8.
