Sebuah batere atau akumulator menghasilkan aliran electron secara terus menerus melalui reaksi kimia antara dua elektroda yang berbeda jenisnya. Elektroda merupakan sebuah konduktor padat di mana arus listrik dapat mengalir melaluinya. Salah satu elektroda mengumpulkan electron dan satu elektroda lainnya memberikan elektronnya. Batere kering menggunakan dua elektroda dari bahan metal yang berbeda yang dimasukkan ke dalam bahan pasta elektrolit.<\/p>\n<p>Arus listrik diproduksi ketika terjadi reaksi kimiawi di dalam pasta elektrolit antara dua elektrodanya, yang menyebabkan terjadinya aliran electron. Konstruksi batere kering diperlihatkan dalam Gambar 1.24. Kontainer batere kering terbuat dari plat seng, sebagai elektroda negatif, yang berfungsi memberikan elektron. Batang arang yang diletakkan ditengah, sebagai elektroda positif yang berfungsi mengumpulkan electron.<\/p>\n<p>Ruang antara kedua elektroda diisi oleh elektrolit lazimnya terbuat dari mangandioksida berbentuk pasta. Pasta asam mangan dioksida ini menyebabkan terjadinya reaksi kimia antara elektroda arang dan seng. Reaksi kimiawi ini memindahkan elektron seng, sehingga menimbulkan aliran electron. Bagian atas batere ditutup rapat agar pasta elektrolitnya tidak kering. Batere kering akan kehilangan energinya setelah dipakai. Akumulator terdiri dari elektroda positif , elektroda negative, dan liquid elektrolit. Elektrolitnya terbuat dari bahan bahan asam sulfat encer. Elektroda positif dilapisi dengan timbal diokasida (lead dioxide) dan elektroda negative terbuat dari timbal murni (sponge lead). Reaksi kimiawi antara dua elektroda dengan cairan elektrolitnya menyebabkan perpindahan electron dan menghasilkan tegangan antara elektrodanya.
