Arus transien terjadi karena kapasitor membutuhkan waktu untuk memenuhi dirinya dengan muatan dan sebaliknya juga terjadi dalam proses mengosongkan dirinya dari muatan. Terdapat dua proses yang terjadi pada kapasitor dalam rangkaian RC, yaitu pengisian muatan dan pengosongan muatan. Misalkan kapasitor pada awalnya dengan menggunakan baterai, telah terisi penuh oleh muatan kemudian baterai dilepas, sehingga diperoleh rangkaian di bawah :

Pada saat awal kapasitor kita anggap terisi muatan penuh maka ketika saklar kita hubungkan akan terdapat arus awal sebesar pada rangkaian sebesar :
