Sebuah rangkaian atau jaringan linear, aktif dan resistif yang mengandung satu atau lebih sumber tegangan atau sumber arus dapat diganti dengan satu sumber tegangan dan satu resistan seri (Theorema Thevenin) atau satu sumber arus dan satu resistan parallel (Theorema Norton). Tegangannya disebut sebagai tegangan pengganti UT dan sumber arusnya disebut sumber arus penggnati IT sedang kedua resistannya sama.
\nTeori Thevenin dan Norton hanya diterapkan untuk rangkaian dua terminal, yang terdiri dari elemen resistan dan sumber tegangan konstan.<\/p>\n

Menurut Thevenin, sebuah rangkaian aktif dua terminal dapat diganti dengan sebuah sumber tegangan UT dan Resistan RT yang terhubung seri (Gambar 4.3).

Dimana UT merupakan tegangan sirkit terbuka dari rangkaian dua terminal (Uab) dan RT merupakan resistansi total dilihat dari terminal a-b ketika sumber tegangan dari rangkaian dua terminal tersebut dihubung singkat.<\/p>\n

Teori Norton
\n<\/strong>Dan menurut Norton, sebuah rangkaian dengan dua terminal dapat diganti dengan sebuah sumber arus konstan IT dan sebuah resistan paralel RT.

Di mana IT merupakan arus hubung singkat yaitu arus ketika terminal a-b dihubung singkat dan RT merupakan resistansi total dilihat dari terminal a-b ketika sumber tegangan dari rangkaian dua terminal tersebut dihubung singkat.<\/p>\n
