Sebagai contoh, bila konduktor yang bertegangan bersentuhan atau menempel ke rangka unit tata udara yang tidak dilengkapi dengan kawat pentanahan, dan kemudian seseorang tanpa sengaja menyentuh rangka tersebut.<\/p>\n<p>Maka ia akan menjadi bagian dari rangkaian listrik tersebut. Gambar 1.16 memperlihatkan fenomena tersebut. Dengan kata lain, ia akan merasakan sengatan arus listrik yang dapat berakibat fatal. Apalagi jika ia tanpa menggunakan alas kaki yang berisolasi dengan bagus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tneutron.net\/mesin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/09\/image4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tneutron.net\/mesin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/09\/image_thumb3.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"347\" height=\"392\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nGambar 1.16 Tipikal Sengatan Arus Listrik melalui Tangan Korban<\/p>\n<p>Kawat pentanahan yang dipasang pada suatu peralatan listrik akan berfungsi sebagai pengaman personil yang akan melindungi personil dari bahaya tersengat arus listrik. Kawat pentanahan dibuat sedemikian rupa sehingga nilai resistansi sangat rendah, biasanya di bawah 5 ohm. Bandingkan resistansi tubuh manusia yang berada dalam rentang ratusan ohm. Arus listrik cenderung mengalir dengan mudah ke bagian rangkaian listrik yang memiliki resistansi paling rendah.<\/p>\n<p>Dengan sifat sedemikian itu, maka keberadaan kawat pentanahan ini akan dapat melindungi personil dari bahaya sengatan arus listrik.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tneutron.net\/mesin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/09\/image7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tneutron.net\/mesin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/09\/image_thumb8.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"266\" height=\"202\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nGambar 1.17 Sistem Pentanahan dengan Elektroda Pentanahan<\/p>\n<p>Dalam banyak kasus kawat pentanahan ini lazim berwarna hijau atau kuning hijau.Sebuah alat tangan bermesin yang dilengkapi dengan kawat pentanahan, maka ia akan dilengkapi dengan steker (plug) yang memiliki tiga kontak, yakni kontak untuk kabel fasa, kabel netral, dan kabel untuk pentanahan, seperti diperlihatkan dalam Gambar 1.18.
