Secara alamiah, sifat aliran arus listrik dalam penghantar atau konduktor listrik seperti aliran air yang berasal dari hulu (pegunungan) menuju ke hilir (lautan). Air yang berada pada tempat yang lebih tinggi selalu akan mengalir ke tempat yang lebih rendah. Air akan selalu mengalir menuju ke lautan. Demikian juga arus listrik, selalu akan mengalir menuju tempat yang memiliki potensial tegangan lebih rendah.<\/p>\n<p>Arus listrik akan selalu mengalir ke tanah (ground), karena tanah memiliki potensial tegangan yang paling rendah. Jadi bila kita berdiri di atas tanah dan menyentuh atau memegang penghantar listrik yang aktif, maka tubuh kita merupakan penghantar listrik yang memungkinkan arus listrik mengalir melewati tubuh dari tangan ke kaki dan akhirnya ke tanah. Pentanahan atau grounding adalah salah satu bagian dari instalasi listrik, yang menghubungkan rangka mesin atau peralatan listrik ke tanah melalui suatu kabel penghantar menuju ke elektroda pentanahan.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam kondisi yang sederhana, elektroda pentanahan dapat berupa pipa galvanis dengan panjang satu hingga dua meter yang dibenamkan ke dalam tanah. Cara ini untuk mendapatkan nilai resistansi dari mesin ke tanah menjadi sangat rendah, biasanya kurang dari sepuluh ohm. Sistem pentanahan ini, bertujuan untuk melindungi personil yang sedang bekerja di suatu mesin atau peralatan listrik dari bahaya tersengat arus listrik.<\/p>\n<p>Seperti diketahui, bahwa nilai resistansi tubuh manusia dapat mencapai ratusan ribu ohm. Sehingga bila seseorang memegang bagian mesin yang bertegangan, maka ia akan terlindungi dari sengatan arus listrik. Karena arus listrik akan mengalir melalui penghantar yang memiliki resistansi lebih rendah. Bila resistansi pentanahan besar, maka personil tersebut masih akan mengalami sengatan listrik. Gambar 1.19 dan Gambar 1.20 memperlihatkan dua fenomena yang bertolak belakang akibat yang ditimbulkan oleh mesin dengan penta-nahan dan mesin tanpa pentanahan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tneutron.net\/mesin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/09\/image13.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tneutron.net\/mesin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/09\/image_thumb13.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"346\" height=\"299\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nGambar 1.19 Dengan Pentanahan, Operator Bebas dari Sengatan Arus Listrik<\/p>\n<p>Untuk alasan keamanan, bagian badan mesin atau peralatan listrik lainnya harus dilengkapi dengan kabel pentanahan. Bila mesin tersebut mengalami gangguan kerusakan isolasi sehingga terjadi hubungan listrik ke badan mesin maka seorang operator atau personil lainnya yang kebetulan menyentuh mesin tersebut tidak akan mengalami sengatan arus listrik.
