Untuk keperluan penyaluran daya ke beban dengan arus yang lebih tinggi, pabrikan telah meningkatkan kemampuan hantar arus kontak rele hingga mencapai ratusan amper. Rele yang memiliki kemampuan hantar arus yang besar ini, lazim disebut sebagai kontaktor. Gambar 2.13 memperlihatkan konstruksi kontaktor.

Kontaktor didisain khusus untuk keperluan penyaluran daya ke beban (power switching) dengan arus yang lebih besar. Kemampuan hantar arus kontak pada kontaktor bervariasi tergantung beban yang akan dipikulnya, biasanya memiliki rentang dari puluhan hingga ratusan amper. Pengkodean kontak pada kontaktor juga berbeda hanya menggunakan satu digit seperti diperlihatkan dalam Gambar 2.14. Pasangan kontak yang digunakan untuk menyalurkan daya ke beban diberi kode 1 \u2013 2 atau L1 \u2013 T1, 3 \u2013 4 atau L2 \u2013 T2, dan 5 \u2013 6 atau L3 \u2013 T3.<\/p>\n

Biasanya pada kontaktor dilengkapi juga dengan pasangan kontak untuk keperluan kontrol, di mana pengkodeannya sama seperti pegkodean untuk kontak rele.

Rele digunakan untuk mengimplementasikan control sequence menggunakan logika boolean. Logika boolean merupakan suatu cara membuat keputusan menggunakan dua-posisi atau status. Status sakelar dalam posisi membuka atau menutup, disekspresikan sebaga logika nol (0) atau satu (1). Ini merupakan bagaimana komputer digital bekerja; pada kenyataannya nama digital diambilkan dari status diskrit on\/off.
