(a) Struktur lembaran kaolinit (b) partikel lempung<\/p>\n<p>Perbandingan besar butiran dan bentuk butiran partikel-partikel tanah liat akan berpengaruh pada plastisitas, kekuatan kering, penyusutan, porositas, dan karakter benda setelah dibakar. Struktur tanah liat ;<br \/>\na. Struktur halus (plastis): tanah liat<br \/>\nb. Perbandingan antara lempung, tanah endapan, dan pasir<\/p>\n<p>Pasir mempunyai ukuran antara 0,05-2 mm, tanah endapan berukuran diameter 0,05 \u2013 0,002 mm, sedangkan lempung (tanah liat) mempunyai ukuran partikel kurang dari 0,002 mm. Dari uraian di atas, tanah liat memiliki sifat-sifat yang berbeda-beda baik dari sifat plastisitasnya, daya kerjanya, susutnya, suhu bakarnya, porositasnya, dan warna bakarnya terang\/gelap. Agar memenuhi persyaratan untuk dapat digunakan maka perlu dilakukan perbaikan sifat-sifat tanah yang demikian yang dilakukan sebelum proses pembentukan.<\/p>\n<p>Yang perlu diingat bahwa penambahan bahan akan saling mempengaruhi sifat-sifat tanah liat tersebut.
