Untuk mengurangi daya suspensi tanah liat ditambahkan flokulan yaitu suatu zat yang berfungsi untuk mempercepat pengendapan butiran-butiran tanah liat, yaitu: magnesium sulfat. Deflokulan: suatu zat yang mempertinggi daya dispersi (menghablur) sehingga butiran-butiran tanah liat tetap melayanglayang. Contoh zat deflokulan: waterglass\/sodium silikat dan sodium carbonate. Penambahan deflokulan membuat butiran tanah liat mengapung<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sifat Slaking <\/strong><br \/>\nSifat slaking adalah sifat dari tanah liat untuk dapat hancur dalam air menjadi butiran-butiran yang lebih halus dalam waktu tertentu dan pada suhu udara biasa.Bila tanah liat dimasukkan ke dalam air, maka lempung menjadi basah kemudian mengembang, selanjutnya lempung tersebut hancur menjadi bagian-bagian kecil.Semakin kurang daya ikat tanah liat, semakin cepat hancurnya. Lempung yang lunak dan porous cenderung lebih cepat hancur dalam air dibandingkan dengan lempung yang keras.
