Jika sistem drainase yang digunakan adalah parit lateral, maka perhitungan jarak dan kedalaman harus dipertimbangkan. Untuk kolektor, jarak parit ditentukan oleh ukuran lahan atau panjang maksimum pipa drainase. Pada lahan datar dengan sistem pipa drainase singular, jarak parit biasanya antara 200-500 m. Elevasi muka air di parit kolektor harus dipertahankan pada suatu kedalaman di bawah lubang pengeluaran dari pipa drainase (lateral).<\/p>\n

Perhitungan dimensi parit mengikuti rancangan saluran tidak berlapis dengan mengetahui parameter seperti, (1) elevasi muka air yang diinginkan, (2) kapasitas debit, dan (3) jenis tanah. Kadang-kadang perhitungan dimensi parit menghasilkan suatu dimensi yang terlalu kecil sehingga dari segi konstruksi dan pemeliharaan sulit dikerjakan.<\/p>\n

A. Jenis Saluran
\n<\/strong>Saluran drainase pada umumnya terbuka atau tertutup. Tetapi seharusnya pada saluran terbuka hanya untuk mengalirkan air buangan yang relatif tidak berbau, seperti air hujan maupun air permukaan (rembesan sistem irigasi, mata air, dan lain-lain). Sedangkan saluran tertutup digunakan untuk mengalirkan air buangan dari kamar mandi, WC, dapur, cucian maupun buangan hasil proses industri.<\/p>\n

B. Penampang Saluran<\/strong>
\nAda berbagai macam penampang saluran yang digunakan, tetapi pada saluran terbuka banyak digunakan saluran berpenampang segi empat maupun trapesium. Untuk penampang saluran tertutup, banyak digunakan pipa saluran berpenampang bulat.
