Special Instructions for Special Materials
Crude Petroleum and Residual Fuel Oil
– Tank Sampling is not recommended, because in general the material is not homogeneous.
– Highly recommended by the Automatic Sampling ASTM D 4177
Gasoline and Distillate Product
– These materials are generally homogenous
– Can be done Tank Sampling
Special Instructions for Special Tests
1. Distillation ASTM D 86
– The recommended techniques are procedures Bottle / Beaker Spot Sampling
– Before the sampling bottle / beaker immersed in the material to be taken
– After obtaining example, immediately sealed and stored in a cooling system at a temperature of 0 to 4.5 0 C (32 to 40 0 F)
2. Vapor Pressure ASTM D 323
– Use a sampling method ASTM D 5842
3. Oxydation Stability ASTM D 525, D 873
– Avoid contamination and exposure to light during sample collection and handling
– To avoid agitation with air will result in oxidation, the example should not be poured, shaken or stirred
– Container examples: use brown glass or clear glass bottle wrapped
– Recommended with running sampling technique, because the sample was taken directly into the bottle. This minimizes the possibility of absorption of air, steam loss and contamination
– Before the sampling bottle is rinsed with a product that will be taken
Sampling Procedures (General)
1. Precautions
– To obtain a representative sample should be done carefully and the correct rules.
– Basically, the oil vapors are toxic and flammable, so avoid inhaling fumes and the sparks
2. Sample Handling
– Examples of highly volatile should be protected from evaporation
– The transfer of examples of sampling equipment to sample container quickly
– After being sent to the laboratory, examples of volatile sample must be cooled before the container is opened
– An example of which is sensitive to light, such as gasoline should be kept in a dark container when testing includes the parameters: color, ON, TEL Content, sludge forming characteristic, stability test
– Outage container – container examples are not filled in full for expansion due to temperature changes and facilitate the homogenization (mixing)
3. Sample Labeling
– Immediately marked clearly and easily erased point
– Include the date, time, name of the officer, the name and number of the tank, the material grade, standard symbols and others.
